To hide objects beyond a certain distance, you could add a camera (such as Make Targeted Perspective Camera) and adjust its Distance Min and Max ports. See example compositions Compare Cameras and Switch Cameras.

There are a number of reasons why a composition that animates a lot of 3D objects might be slowing down, so if the camera doesn't solve the problem, it would help if you could post your composition (or a simplified version of it).

Philip (@Pianomatic), are you thinking a visual cue on nodes that could ever be collapsed (going by your proposal, that would include any node with at least one input) or on nodes that can currently be collapsed (have one input receiving data)?

@jstrecker posted a new Answer, “Answer to Pulling in online data

If the data is provided in the form of an RSS feed, you can use the Fetch RSS Items node. (See example composition Display RSS Items.)

In Vuo 1.2.6, there will be a new node called Make Tree from Text that can parse JSON or XML. To pull in data from a web service that provides JSON- or XML-formatted data, you would use a Fetch Data node to download the data from the URL and pass it along to the Make Tree from Text node. (Feature request: Load structured data.)

scene optimisation

Lets say I build a bunch of 3d objects and scatter them around the world space. I was wondering if it's possible to turn them on when the cameras close to them and turn them off when the cameras far away.

Ideally I'd like to build a digital landscape that you can move around with the arrow keys, and with all the objects animations going off at the same time it makes my scene really heavy. So I had a thought that I might be able to optimise this by hiding things when I'm further away from them and turning them on when I'm closer to them.

@marioepsley posted a new Question, “Pulling in online data

Is it possible to pull in online data to effect or control a composition, for example, weather data, or how many people search a term or phrase on google etc.

I'm not a coder but I'd like to do some data visualisation and am trying to find an example comp so I can see how to do this. Any help welcome,

Thanks guys, I just moved over from Quartz Composer and loving VUO, fascinating little program. Well done!

Dear,

I put quotes as:

             "dependencies" : [ "AR" ],

following documentation that reads:

Notice that the static and dynamic library names leave off the "lib" prefix, and the file extension is optional; libassimp.a becomes assimp or assimp.a, and libicuuc.dylib becomes icuuc or icuuc.dylib.

When i run vuo-link (with --library-search-path ~/SDKs/ARToolKit5-bin-5.3.2r1-OSX/lib option ) i get in console:

01/03/17 08:55:56,558 vuo-link[1107]: VuoCompiler.cc:2077 getLinkerInputs() Warning: Could not locate dependency 'AR'.

If instead i put

             "dependencies" : [ "AR.a" ],

this seems to solve the error.

Just to know if I'm doing something wrong, or if the documentation saying that file extension is optional is a mistake.

ciao michele

An advanced tutorial on plugin developing

Hi,

the existing tutorial about plugin development is surely wonderful to start with that task. Anyway, I met some difficulties when you need to deal with external libraries. Not only dynamic ones, that I read are more tricky, but also static one: watching an example on how to develop a simple node that have to deal with a preexisting static library would be a good example, in my opinion.

Gradient Phase and Period

Would it be possible to add phase and period controls to the gradient image generators to make repeating and animated patterns? For example, give a Make Linear Gradient Image 3 colours but then give it a small period to repeat the 3 colours over and over. Phase would then let you animate the gradient over time with options similar to the Change Wrap Mode node such as mirror, hold, repeat etc. It would also be great to have interpolation method control between the colours in order to make hard steps.
