A shortcut key to close the Node Library (say Escape) and an auto-close preference

When working without a ext. display I find I need the Node Library closed whenever I'm not actually inserting a node.

In QC there's a preference to auto-close the Library when you hit Return to insert a patch onto the canvas (or drag it over I guess would be good to) which is very useful. Unnecessary mouse gestures repeated over and over are time wasting basically, and it's a noticeable effort for me to close it all the time.

So a preference for auto closing and also a keyboard shortcut for closing the Library like "esc" key would be a big efficiency gain for not too much coding drama. Also not crazy about the node going to the pointer location which is often under the Library if using the mouse to select the node. So having options for effortlessly closing Library will help with that too.

Colour input wires for selected nodes rainbow cable colours (or something)

Look at this image and tell me where the Calculate node (brown tint) input wires come from (it is currently selected). I find it very hard to trace cables sometimes. Having the ports half hung-off the nodes makes no difference IMHO, even in the example comps I notice cases where wires are overlapping and impossible to trace. (Tracing wires was the original rationale for port position relative to node edge in Vuo pre-launch days).

Now consider this possibility. Wires get colours assigned in order of input ports no matter how many nodes are selected, all node input ports get coloured in this way until deselected.

Ability to detach drawers and connect them to multiple nodes

[ Original title: Drawers as nodes (they really get in the way sometimes) ]

It would clean up design aesthetic and improve node compaction on canvas to have nodes as discrete nodes themselves to be moved wherever width expanded or contracted as required to preview source info. This came up ages ago in the UI design thread but I don't think i ever made it a FR.

Fig. 1. Drawers replacing the two drawers on the Render Scene to Window node in expanded state

Fig. 2. Drawers replacing the two drawers on the Render Scene to Window node in collapsed state

One consideration is informing the user that multiple connections are possible, dropping a second wire on the port would need to spawn the drawer node and join it to the new wire (and existing) not replace the existing wire.

One nice feature to add would be tinting all the wires going to drawer input ports (this would break with the current behavior for tinting, currently only wires connected to output ports get tinted in Vuo when one tints a node). Means all the input values for, say, a Calculation node are very hard to trace at times.

I did consider another way of neatening them: draw at the bottom of node. More than one port with drawer would require header for each list or drawer toggling, I suppose. Here the Objects port is underlined to indicate the Drawer contents is of that port. clicking the Window Settings port would replace Objects with the Window Settings drawer (with quick animation). Probably less practical than separate node, so I made FR for the separate node solution.

And drawers need to be closed sometimes…

Zoom in/out/actual-size shortcuts like Adobe apps (and others)

I would really like to see:

Zoom in: Spacebar + Command + 'Click' with input stylus/mouse/touchpad

Zoom out: Spacebar + Command + Option + 'Click' with input stylus/mouse/touchpad

Something I advocated for long ago, before even Spacebar was deemed acceptable for Pan/Scrolling control (the whole modal discussion).

Remember canvas position when composition re-opened

Would be nice if compositions remembered canvas position, screen position and zoom level when saved and re-opened. I like to have a to-do list inside the comp and save it showing that list. I dislike the random opening position thing, it's almost unsettling when you're restarting Vuo from a crash or opening old compositions.
